August Feature: How to display a sculpture
|
|
Most of us have art in our homes, and it’s often the flat variety – prints, photographs and paintings. This kind of art is relatively easy to display, and usually hung on a wall (or refrigerator).
Sculpture and other 3-dimensional objects
require a more considered approach. Showing a sculpture at its best in your home (or office) is an art unto itself. Display your object well and it will come alive; display it without thought and it will blend into or overwhelm the surroundings.
So, keep in mind these 3 simple tips to make your sculptures shine:
1) Find some good lighting. It’s all in the lights and lighting. You should place your sculpture in an area where it can bathe in natural or natural-like light. The light could come from a window or skylight, but preferably from a dedicated overhead source, such as spotlight. The light should be subtle. Remember, you’re trying to enhance the sculptures tones and textures rather than cast extraneous shadows.
2) Pick an uncluttered location. Ensure you give your sculpture enough space to be seen from multiple angles. Place it in an area that complements its form and enhances its qualities. Consider placing a smaller object on a pedestal to bring it to eye-level.
3) Keep it fresh. Your sculpture lives with you, so be bold and move it around once in a while. You’ll see new features "that were not there before". Seeing the sculpture from a different angle you’ll come to appreciate it in a whole new way. Display it on a circular table to create discussion; place it in your bedroom for quite reflection.
We’ll be glad to give you more advice on how to display and care for your art objects. Just come in and ask your friendly art251 staff.

| Number 1 Art Gallery in Tarrant County |
It’s official. We’re the best art gallery in Tarrant County and the third best Dallas-Ft.Worth area! In fact, art251 was the only gallery in Tarrant County to make the top 5.
We beat out many bigger name, established galleries and art spaces. So, considering we’ve only been around for just under a year, we are ecstatic and humbled.
So, again, a very BIG thank you to all our loyal customers and friends. Many of you voted for us in the WFAA poll, and we enjoyed reading all the wonderful reviews as well! And thank you WFAAList on WFAA.com for running the 2009 Best of the Best A-List contest, with 60,485 voters from all over North Texas!
Wondering what all the hoopla! is about? Well, we have an exhibit by Trish Biddle, a local and nationally recognized artist. We’re featuring a range of her decadently stylish originals and prints. The show runs until August 8. Also, we’re home to the only art-o-mat in North Texas. And, of course, we’re a beautiful shell housing original works from over 40 talented local artists who work in clay, oil, ceramic, silver, wood, glass, polymer, ink, fabric and more.

| New Arrivals: Adaptive Reuser and Woodworking Filmmaker |
art251 welcomed a couple of new artists recently, including Christine Terrell and Guy W Cearley.
Christine Terrell describes herself as a reckless recycler, adaptive reuser and upcycler. So, what does all of this mean? Well, she makes everyday things — principally jewelry — from other everyday things. And, the results, are quite simply, unique and striking.
Christine Terrell’s work is primarily concerned with re-purposing steel from printed containers. Finding the tins and then selecting the most intriguing areas to work with is, in some ways, a holdover from her graphic design training. She finds it somehow both comforting and challenging to work with found imagery. Christine tends to be drawn to bright colors and bold graphics and many of her pieces reflect this.
Guy W Cearley is a person of many talents. Currently, he makes his living as a freelance writer, director, cameraman, editor, graphic artist and animator. He has created or worked on numerous documentary films, mini-series videos and commercials, including History of the USS Enterprise, Tom Hank documentary, If I Ran a Zoo, History of the Russian Navy, The Clinic, Teen Court.
Yet, when he is not shooting film or teaching his passion lies in woodworking. He crafts beautiful and functional desktop boxes from exotic woods.

| Featured Artist – Dana Blanchard |
|
Dana Blanchard was been one of art251’s signature artists since we first opened our doors. Her luminous paintings evoke a strong first impression and yet encourage contemplation and reflection. Dana’s works fall into two broad categories: landscapes and abstracts. Her landscapes, of which we have several beautiful examples, are distillations of scenes, the essence of suspended worlds in color and light. Dana’s abstracts are varied in nature, ranging from geometric to organic. All are condensed elements of the familiar – remembrances of passing moments.
Now we are delighted to unveil a series of Dana’s newest, experimental decorative abstracts. Bright, yet subtle, they display a new approach to rich textures and bold forms.
For Dana Blanchard, immersion in art has been lifelong. Her artistic potential was cultivated early with private tutoring as a child and progressed through university study. However, a doctorate degree and subsequent careers in higher education sequestered art into a personal endeavor. Then in 2002, Dana became an active career artist marketing her work primarily on the East Coast. In particular, both the Limner Gallery and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in NYC have given her invaluable exposure through juried competitions and gallery invitations. Now, Dana is very pleased to join the vibrant art world of her new home, Texas.
