December Feature: The Gift of Art
|
Yes, we’re an art gallery. But, do you know art makes a great gift? It can be a gift for your soul, or your soul-mate, your business associate, your children or your bare walls. Art lasts a life-time and will give you lasting stories and bring lasting pleasure, which is rather longer than the latest electronic gizmo from overseas.
art251 has original, one-of-a-kind gifts for all ages and tastes and at all price ranges, starting at only $5 for an original artwork from our beautiful blue art-o-mat machine. By the way, art-o-mats make ideal stocking stuffers and unique gifts for teachers.
It’s so fulfilling to give a gift to a special person, but ironically it seems increasingly hard to find one (a gift, that is). So, during every gift giving occasion consider giving original art. Art can refresh someone’s home, it can bring color to a grey office wall, it can bring endless smiles and reflection, it can deliver meaning, it can spark quiet revolution. Art can make a perfect gift, year-round, for a hard-working teacher, your secretary, your kids, your boss, your dentist, your valentine (yes, I know it’s only December).
We have a wide selection of one-of-kind gifts under $50, under $250, and under $500. Our recommended items include: artpaks from our beautiful blue art-o-mat machine, mini-canvases of Hawk, Rocket Dog, and his friends, abstract glass flowers, small word bowls, muse cups, handcarved gourd boxes, copper votives, polymer clay jewelry, select glass vases and platters, limited edition photographs, small canvases, copper and steel roses, and much more.
Check out our growing gift section on the art251 website, right here.
So, get creative this season, and give the gift of art!

December Show: The Hawk (and Friends) Art Show, Marnie Vollenhals
|
Hot on the heels our October art show, featuring the gorgeous nature photography of Sean Fitzgerald, we are now turning art251 into a woodland. Not literally of course.
We’re out to prove that good art can also be great fun. So, we’re delighted to feature the works of Marnie Vollenhals in our next show, The Hawk Art Show. The Opening Reception is Friday, December 11, 6-9pm. The show runs from December 11 until January 16, 2010.
Marnie Vollenhals is a natural born Illustrator and a prolific artist — she paints, paints and paints. Her most recent paintings of a group of animal friends, centered around Hawk, the Rocket Dog, a suburban dog with big dreams, is garnering a loyal following both locally and nationally.
Marnie comes from a family of artists, which goes back generations. From an early age she has been surrounded by rich visual arts. This has enabled her to establish a unique illustrative style, melding classic and modern influences, and diverse ideas and media. Marnie’s works balance a keen sense of design with her skills of artistic composition. And, shining through is an underlying sense of happiness and a playful spirit.
Many of her pieces are painted for children, and from their perspective. So, bring your children and your inner child — come and revisit the world that you never really left behind.

| New Arrivals: New Art from Old Gas Pump Doors – Jeff Wood, Photographer |
No ordinary photographs are these! Jeff Wood embeds many of his cool new images inside some rather unique frames. For instance you might find his images of vintage cars inside vintage, and very collectible, gas pump doors; or you might find images of cool musicians within an antique gum ball machine.
Jeff grew up with a passion for photography, experimenting with art and anything involving creativity. Whether it’s building with Legos, taking things apart to see how they work, restoring old cars or composing "lowbrow" photo art, Jeff is constantly evolving.
Now an accomplished freelance photographer working primarily in North Texas, his world is seen through a slightly warped lens. Never one to follow the norm, Jeff steps outside the mainstream photography world by shooting primarily with vintage and plastic toy film cameras. It is this non-conformist approach to photography that produces incredible one of a kind artistic results. Jeff’s range of abilities not only includes a vast knowledge of film and film cameras, but modern digital photography as well.

| Featured Artist – Ginny Henley |
Understandably, all of our artists like to express themselves through their art. However, in introducing you to our featured artist, Ginny Henley, this month, it seemed rather apt to quote her directly,
“I love living in the 21st century. New stuff to play with comes to the marketplace with regularity. Art is not in the medium. Art is in what the artist does with the medium. Paint can protect your walls, but it can also feed your soul.”
While Ginny Henley has worked and experimented with a diverse range of media, her latest, unique creations are sculpted in polymer clay.
Polymer Clay is polyvinylchloride suspended in plasticizer. When cured in an oven, it hardens. By manipulating contrasting colors of clay into a long roll, the face of the resulting cane can be sliced and pieced together to form intricate kaleidoscopic designs. Some of her works have as many as five translucent layers, some containing canes, metal leaf, alcohol inks and other inclusions.
